Google Search Profiles: From Search Engine to Audience Platform?

Reviewed 30 September 2026

Search profiles bring a publisher or creator’s website, articles and social presence together in a dedicated destination on Google. People can follow that profile, and Google says followed content becomes more likely to appear for that audience in Discover.

The obvious interpretation is visibility. The more interesting marketing interpretation is continuity.

Traditional search is transactional. A person has a need, performs a query, receives results and leaves. A follow relationship is different. It persists beyond an individual query. The platform can remember an expressed preference and use it to shape future discovery.

That moves the relationship closer to an audience model.

For publishers, Search profiles can be useful. They provide another surface on which to present a coherent identity and connect content from multiple channels. Google has also expanded management features for organisations operating multiple brands.

But the value exchange deserves attention. Publishers gain a new distribution and retention mechanism. Google gains another reason for users to maintain preferences and relationships within its ecosystem.

This resembles a wider marketing shift from anonymous reach toward identifiable preference. Instead of Google inferring only that a user often visits a particular source, the user can explicitly follow it. Explicit signals can make personalisation more understandable to the user and potentially more useful to the platform.

For a business, this should sit alongside—not automatically replace—owned audience mechanisms. An email subscriber, registered customer or direct visitor has a different relationship from a person who follows the brand through an intermediary.

The useful question is therefore not “Should we have a Search profile?” It is “What role should a Search profile play in our channel mix?”

If it creates incremental discovery, it may be valuable. If it strengthens retention among audiences who already use Google heavily, that may also be valuable. But businesses should still understand where the relationship is stored, who controls the interface and how dependent future visibility is on the platform.

Search profiles illustrate an important change in Search marketing: Google is not only helping people find sources at the moment of a query. It is increasingly giving people ways to maintain an ongoing relationship with those sources through Google itself.
