Google’s Competitors May Explain More Than Its SEO Documentation

Reviewed 30 September 2026

SEO documentation explains how websites can participate in Search. It does not necessarily explain the competitive environment shaping the product itself.

To understand why Google expands Search into conversational answers, richer discovery, video, shopping, personalisation and complex task completion, marketers should also look at how consumer discovery is changing.

People do not begin every journey with a traditional web search. Product research can start on marketplaces, social platforms, video services, specialist communities or AI assistants. Different platforms compete for different moments of attention.

That does not prove a particular Google feature was launched because of one named competitor. Product motives are rarely that simple, and external observers do not have access to every internal decision.

But competitive positioning provides a useful analytical lens.

If consumers increasingly expect conversational assistance, a search product that cannot support conversation risks appearing less useful. If discovery becomes visual or creator-led, a purely text-link experience may cover less of the journey. If AI assistants can research complex questions, Search has a reason to become capable of similar tasks.

Google itself now describes AI Mode as combining a search engine with conversational AI and reports that new AI features are contributing to record query volumes.

For businesses, this perspective matters because Search changes are not created solely for the SEO industry. They are responses to consumers, technology and competition.

That means optimisation should not focus only on satisfying documented search requirements. Marketers also need to understand how their customers actually discover, evaluate and choose.

The strategic question is not “What does Google want websites to do?” It is “What is happening to consumer discovery, and how is Google adapting its product to remain relevant within it?”

That produces a more durable marketing strategy because it starts with customer behaviour rather than a single platform.
