Google AI Mode: The Battle for the Customer Journey

Reviewed 30 September 2026

Google describes AI Mode as bringing together the strengths of a search engine and conversational AI. It supports follow-up questions and increasingly complex tasks. Google reported in 2026 that AI Mode had surpassed one billion monthly users and that its queries were more than doubling each quarter.

Those figures matter, but the more interesting marketing question is what kind of relationship AI Mode creates with the user.

Traditional search often represents a series of separate interactions. Search for a product, open several websites, return, refine the query and search again. Conversational interfaces can keep more of that exploration inside one continuous session.

That potentially expands Google’s role across the customer journey.

A person may begin with broad discovery, ask for criteria, compare options, refine requirements and move closer to a decision without repeatedly restarting the research process. The commercial importance is not simply that the interface uses AI. It is that continuity can increase the amount of the decision journey mediated by one platform.

For users, this can reduce effort. For Google, a more capable experience can increase engagement and strengthen its position as the starting point for complex decisions. For businesses, the consequences are mixed.

Being visible at one keyword or ranking position becomes a less complete description of influence. A brand may need to be understood across multiple questions and stages of consideration. At the same time, businesses risk having more of the comparison process mediated before the customer reaches their site.

This is why AI Mode should not be treated only as an SEO feature. It is a customer-journey product.

The practical response is to understand the questions customers ask before, during and after they recognise a need. Businesses should make their differentiation, evidence, expertise and proposition easy to understand across that journey, while continuing to build reasons for customers to move into owned channels.

The strategic issue is not whether AI replaces search. Google is explicitly combining them. The issue is how much of the customer journey Google can make convenient enough to remain inside its environment—and how businesses preserve meaningful influence within that journey.
